Greys Court is a beautiful manor house, set in its own 300 acre park, in the rolling Chilterns. It was until fairly recently a private home and is now owned and run by the National Trust.

The original manor was in the form of a small castle, the tower of which built in the 12th Century, dominates the gardens and the later house beyond. As it has been owned for only 5 families who have rebuilt and extended it from time to time it retains many of the features of each generation of ownership. The present building has styles from Tudor to Victorian and Edwardian giving a variety of colours and textures to the facade.

In its early history it was lived in by the de Grey family and the 2th Baron Grey de Rotherfield who was a professional soldier in the service of Edward III and was one of the initial Knights of the Garter. A later owner, Francis Knolly was a 1st cousin of Queen Elizabeth I and her Treasurer of the Royal Household. He reconstructed and added to the original house in expectation of a royal visit which did not eventually take place. The house was again altered and added to be the Pauls family in the 18th century and modernised in the 20th.

The gardens were reset out in the 70’s and are both interesting and beautiful. There are walks through the park and one route 1.2km long circumvents the house and estate and is recommended.
